Somnath explained that this knowledge spread to the Arab world and eventually reached Europe, where it was reimagined and attributed to Western scientists as their discoveries.
One challenge faced during that time, as highlighted by the Chairman of the Space Commission (ISRO) and Secretary of the Space Department, was that Sanskrit was used as the lingua franca, despite lacking a written script. It was transmitted through oral tradition and memorization, allowing the language to survive. It was later that the Devnagari Script was adopted for Sanskrit.
Somnath credited Panini, who documented the rules of Sanskrit grammar, for playing a significant role. He emphasized that Sanskrit is an ideal language for conveying scientific thoughts and processes, which is why engineers and scientists hold a great appreciation for it. Sanskrit aligns well with the language of computers, making it beneficial for those studying artificial intelligence. Ongoing research on the Sanskrit language explores its computational applications.
Somnath further emphasized that learning Sanskrit offers numerous advantages beyond science. He highlighted that Indian literature in Sanskrit possesses remarkable originality and philosophical depth. It is also essential from a scientific perspective. Sanskrit embodies an integrated approach to cultural, spiritual, and scientific studies, without any artificial separation between these realms.
The statement made by S Somnath is interesting despite his Kerala background. In all probability, leaders from Tamil Nadu will never accept this kind of statement since they are averse to Sanskrit and Hindi.
